Joji: Going viral is nothing new
Though a fairly new artist, Joji has already affected the world in a major way. From becoming one of the most controversial internet personalities, releasing comedy music that went straight to the top of the iTunes charts, and starting the Harlem Shake trend, going viral is an old hat. So when the downbeat video for the R&B song ‘Will He’ hit the internet, people began to notice the man sitting in a blood-filled bathtub and wandering about looking confused was familiar - maybe even more so if he was in glasses and a blue shirt, or a pink bodysuit.
Though having already achieved fame, Joji, or George Miller, has made it clear that his new music isn’t associated with the characters that gained him attention in his past. While his Filthy Frank YouTube channels are still active, he is making more serious music in favor of the crude videos and comedy rap he released under the Filthy Frank and Pink Guy aliases.

“I’m making music I want to hear now,” Miller stated in an interview.
Joji began to release songs on his Soundcloud account in early 2016, now with almost 30 million combined plays. The songs ‘Thom’ and ‘you suck charlie’ were announced as singles for a project titled ‘Chloe Burbank: Volume 1’. While never officially released, songs and supposed tracklists for the project are floating around online. Later the same year, Joji signed to 88rising along Rich Chigga and other Asian rap artists with a Western sound. His music began to get uploaded on the 88rising YouTube page. |
On October 7, 2017, ‘Will He’ was released on YouTube and went to the top of Spotify’s viral charts, staying there until Joji’s EP ‘In Tongues’ was released the same month, featuring ‘Will He’ as the lead track, and four new songs. The EP closes with ‘Worldstar Money (Interlude)’, and was previously released on Joji’s Soundcloud. Peaking at 58 on the Billboard charts and receiving positive reviews from critics, Joji has a promising career ahead of him as he is currently on a tour of Asia with his label mates, and three major US shows coming in February.
Joji’s second single from ‘In Tongues’ was released on December 6th: ‘Demons’. Already closing on one million views, it is just as downcast as ‘Will He’, and seems just as viral.
While on Joji’s Soundcloud he describes his own music as “romantic garbage”, I think his music is pure mastery. Hot New Hip-Hop describes ‘In Tongues’ as “elegant, and captivating”.

So what’s next for Joji?
“I shoved some of the best songs into an EP, because an album won’t come out until next year at the earliest. My knowledge has expanded, music theory wise.”
With an artist that is already so good, only time will tell what that can mean for George Miller, and Joji.
