Night Lovell
Can a God be Real if Nobody Knows They Exist?
If there’s one thing we’ve learned about the game of Soundcloud rap, you can never have too many co-signs. Rapper Night Lovell has received support from the likes of Pouya, Bones, and the horror-inspired producer Fifty Grand, and has comparisons drawn to $uicideboy$ and even XXXTENTACION. Two mixtapes into his career later, Lovell is Soundcloud’s best kept secret, and has the aura of an artist that is about to blow the fuck up.
With only two videos circulating the internet after released his second mixtape, Red Teenage Melody, Lovell surprised the internet when he dropped a video with one of his new singles: Jaime’s Sin. The video revealed a shaved head, Lovell’s way of saying he is going to war, and his first face tattoo: the mark of a successful rapper. On the Cian P produced beat, Lovell broods, “Jaime wasn’t Jaime when she drank up all the Jameson… Jaime, Jaime, Jaime, drank up all the Jameson.” The video ends with a chilling black and white shot of Lovell putting a gun to his forehead, leaving the viewer with goosebumps and a sense of foreboding, drawing thoughts of an old lyric of his: “Is Lovell really dead?”
Jamie’s Sin, as dark as it is, is the third single Lovell has dropped on us since RTM, the others titled Whoever U Are, and R.I.P. Trust. Each are undoubtedly Lovell at his most dreaded. His signature snarl over beats that are both lo-fi and snapping makes one envision the rapper awake at 3 AM obsessing over a girl who broke his heart. “I drink blood like water,” Lovell announces casually on Whoever U Are, going on to proclaim, “I like pain, I hate fame.” While not the first rapper to compare himself to a vampire, and certainly not the first to hide behind a black veil, Lovell is certainly the first that you believe could support his claims with a body count. “I’m insane,” he admits on R.I.P. Trust, his self-proclaimed favorite song to date. “That’s a shame for my life.” On the contrary, it seems that Lovell doesn't give a shit. Who could have possibly hurt Night Lovell?

In his No Jumper interview, Adam asks Lovell, “Did you fall in love in Russia?” While he denies it, Lovell’s lanky frame gets tense, as though he isn’t keen to reveal the full story. On multiple occasions, Lovell has posted photos of the girl in question, a Russian. Is she just a member of his crew, a fan that has grown close to one of her favorite artists, or something more? Lovell also denies having a girlfriend, but she definitely seems to mean more to him than an average woman.
Not always as dark as he has become, Lovell’s first mixtape feels more like something one would dig up on the back pages of Tumblr than the average rap album. Concept Nothing spans fifteen tracks, stuffed with bangers; standouts being Beneath, Forget About Me, Trees of the Valley, and Dark Light, the first song Lovell ever recorded. The latter came with a video, simply some shots of Lovell lurking around an abandoned building at night. Though certainly emo, it fits the song perfectly. Rarely can a director put together a better visual than the musician can. The mixtape’s ninth track, James Cameron took my Bitch, features an interview with the Avatar director. While Lovell didn’t conduct said interview, the interlude highlights the rapper’s love for Avatar, and his love for nature.
While his first tape only featured Fifty Grand, Night Lovell’s second effort drew features from the likes of Nessly, Wavy Drexler, and Dylan Brady. While it spawned a video for the single Contraband, the eleventh track, Still Cold / Pathway Private is an obvious standout, and remains one of Lovell’s most popular songs to date. Despite this, as most artists do, Lovell suffered a definite sophomore slump. Red Teenage Melody lacks much of the luster that Concept Nothing boasted.
With each new single having surpassed or quickly reaching the million view marker, Lovell establishes himself effortlessly as one of the underground artists to watch in the coming months, if he ever decides to stop teasing his fans. Clips have swept across the internet of Lovell in the studio, dropping his drawl and roaring out a eulogy for all that stand in his way. But will his hesitancy to rise kill the wave he is riding?
In a YouTube video of Lil Pump preforming his hit D Rose posted by 88rising, a commenter points out that among the celebrities cooling in the background you can catch a glimpse of Night Lovell. While he could easily bounce to the front of the crowd and wrap a long arm around Pink Guy, Ski Mask the Slump God, (Both appearing in the video) or even Pump himself, Night Lovell seems perfectly content to chill in the background. “I hate fame,” he reminds us on Whoever U Are.
As fans everywhere hope, with myself among them, is that Night Lovell has big plans for the rest of the year, and even bigger ones in line for 2018. It seems he is in no rush, unfortunately. Though he promised on Twitter fans would receive from him a “dark summer”, it wasn’t until summer ended that Lovell chose to drop R.I.P. Trust. Will Night Lovell at last put together an album and blast through competition with his signature voice and dark beats? Time will tell - though who can tell what a god is thinking
